Hi, Snhnry. Haven't heard much from you about the movie, but I'm guessing based on your "Owl Star" comment that you didn't care much for it either. In any case, things have been going fairly well on making updates for it. For the most part, I think the existing pages we have are good in terms of covering it, but I've identified a few topics that I think might merit their own film-based pages. Let me know what you think about the possibility of creating film versions of any or all of the following:
- Time Freeze
- Haven City
I'll integrate anything else that doesn't merit its own page into the existing articles.
Oh, one other thing - I don't suppose you might be able to aid me when it comes to the following characters: Clay Moore, Peaty Boggs, Trouble Kelp, Grub Kelp and Sky Willow? All of them are credited as appearing in the film, yet I'm not sure if any of them are actually ever even identified by name or even have any dialog. Very frustrating. If not, don't worry about it. I was only really tasked with updating major characters, anyway. Disney's fault for not doing a better job when it comes to this.
For the question about film pages, I think that the Time Freeze, Haven, and Magic pages do not need separate pages. The others could have separate pages, but they could also be integrated into the existing ones.
For the question about the characters, I don't believe that any of them had a meaningful role in the film. I found pictures for Trouble Kelp and Grub Kelp in How to Be a LEPRecon and have uploaded them, but I don't know if they ever appear on camera at all.
Ah, thanks! Well, nice to finally put some names to faces. As for the new article creation, sounds good. I think I can make good pages for both LEPRecon and Troll, the others, yeah, no reason not to just integrate them into the existing articles.
Snhrny - just a heads-up that I just deleted a page called "Artemis Fowl Backstory" that was posted by a user called "Sub2funzies." You can check the deletion log if you want to see it, but trust me, it was complete nonsense.
So I was recently contacted about a planned new feature for the wiki. I don't really know all the details yet, but they want me to try work on some specific pages. Regarding pages for the film, are we planning to have separate pages for anything that's in the film? In other words, should something like Gnommish be getting its own film-specific article? Anyway, really looking forward to the film - less than a week to go now!
I've only been splitting out film pages if there are significant differences between the books and the film. I also weigh how long the article will be in general. If it is a longer article, I would split it into a tabbed film version.
Agreed. Unless I'm mistaken, that A Fowl Adventure book is the only one that's really given us actual story content, and that's pretty thin. But not too much longer before we'll have the whole motherlode all at our fingertips. That's the nice thing about the Disney+ release - all of it right there to pursue and use at leisure, the second the film releases.
I noticed that the film seems to refer to the character as "Artemis Fowl Jr." rather than "Artemis Fowl II," so I created the film version at that name, though still with "(film)" at the end. Feel free to change it if you don't think that's a good idea, but I think it makes sense to go with the naming in the film.
I debated this, since they're both technically correct, but ended up going with the Artemis Fowl II because it's what we already have for the book version. I think Jr. flows better though, so I don't have an issue with it.
Snhnry - I went ahead and created the spoiler template over at Template:Spoiler. Let me know what you think of it and if you think there should be any changes. Also, did you want to categorize articles that have spoilers on them? If so, let me know and I can try to work in that functionality - for right now, I just wanted to go ahead and get it set up. I haven't really had too much experience making templates in the past, so I wanted to just go ahead with the basics.
Great, I'll look at it and start working on getting that and the new main page integrated. I personally can't think of a compelling reason to categorize spoilery pages, but I don't really know the best practices for that. If we can get it set up, great, if not I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Also, I actually got the digital versions of all the new books, so I'm going to be adding the important images from those. I noticed the images you added seem to be scans or actual pictures of the pages, so I was hoping to update those with digital versions for maximum quality. Just wanted to let you know before you got too far into adding them. I appreciate the time you took to do it, though!
Yeah, sure, digital versions would be much better! You go ahead and replace those then. And if I have any others, how about I just go ahead and upload scans of the ones that I want, and then you can replace them with the appropriate digital versions?
As far as the spoilers, I think some wikis do and some don't, but personally, I can't really think of a practical reason for doing it either, so my personal inclination would be to leave it off. But once we have more film info, I might create a portal of sorts for material related to the film.
P.S.: I see you've also started creating characters specifically for the versions of the characters as seen in the film. Cool. I'll see about working up some sort of system soon for identification between the two different versions and that sort of thing.
Snhnry - I just got my hands on a copy of this book and I was wondering if you would be okay with me adding information from it to the wiki. From what I can tell, it seems to cover the first part of the film, which in many ways is similar to the original book, but diverges on a couple of key plot points. If you want, I could also work up a spoiler template that could be used on any articles that have information originating from the film or an associated product.
Cool! I don't have much more time tonight, but I'll make it my first priority tomorrow. I don't have any of the other new books yet, though I definitely plan to get them. So for now, I'll make this one my priority, and if you want to work on stuff from some of the others, that would be great.
Hello again! With the film inching closer, we'd like to work on some updates, including the main page and navigation to help bring focus to the film and novels. Would you like to work together to design that, or would you like me to set up a sample on a sandbox first?
I'd love to collaborate with you on that, if you have some samples? I've had some ideas since the the first trailers released, but haven't been able to fully realize them yet. We should be able to get something set up.
I believe we decided it would be great to split the pages for the major characters if possible, while keeping some of the more minor pages as one. If you have expertise in that field we could certainly do it.
I think this is a great start. It does highlight the movie without sacrificing any of the important info already present on the main page. I'll work on getting some character box pictures made for the film versions. I'm good with using this template, and then tweaking it later if needed.
Hello again, we're excited to be partnering with the company for the digital release on Disney+ next month. We're looking to restyle it (again), is there any elements you'd like to see preserved? We'll see if we can make it work.
Nothing in particular, no. Could you go into more detail about what changes will be made? What is the extent of the (what I assume to be) advertising that will be going into the wiki? Will it be similar to what is present on the (for example) Star Wars fandom page? More? Less? My hope is that we can maintain a good balance between promoting the film and acting as a source of nonbiased objective reference for people interested in all parts of the fandom.
Hi there :) I'm working directly with Disney along with TimeShade, and there was a request in a meeting I'm having today to take down the background you guys were using. Hope you don't mind, but there was an immediate need to go a little simpler for Disney's benefit.
Also, the favicon, workmark, and other topbar imagery are based around themes from the graphic novels and are pretty dated at this point. I would love to have something professionally designed in there if that is part of the plans (preferably that could be permanent and work for the books side of the wiki as well). Just let me know.
Are there still some changes coming to the theming? I saw a few banners were added today. I'm sort of waiting to change the Favicon and other things (if they're not part of the provided redesign) until we get the final setup.
Hi again :) Sorry for the delay in responding, but we've been in some fairly intense negotiations with Disney+. Because they really respect the work you're doing here, they've decided on a more hands-off approach for the community. Instead, we're building another experience for them. So, even though we had built a new home page at their request, it's really entirely up to you whether you want to use it.
If you wanna take a look, it's at w:c:czech-artemis-fowl-out. If you want help putting it up, I'm happy to. But if you're fine with what you have now, I'm also not offended. :)
Thanks for being flexible and offering your community up for a re-design. The Disney+ execs to whom I spoke were all impressed with the work your wiki has done so far!
Thanks! I'll look for elements from your redesign page that I can implement here. One thing I really hope I can insist on is that I want the wiki wordmark to remain non specific to the film so that it can represent both sides of Artemis Fowl. In my opinion, using the movie logo as the wordmark (especially with Disney logo directly in the image), creates a false sense that the wiki may be only for the film, or may cause other confusion. Obviously I understand if Fandom as a company needs to override that decision in order to meet an obligation to Disney, but that's my two cents on that. I'm going to start working on a new wordmark that pays homage to both the film and the books/graphic novels, unless I hear otherwise.
I'm sure we can also highlight whatever new page you guys are building for them. Let me know if we want to include that on the main page in some way.
Per Czech's request, I've updated the page for Butler to "Domovoi Butler." Disney really wants to go with this name apparently. Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and start adding info from that page. CzechOut is working on getting clarification on "Aculus" / "Aculos," so hopefully we hear back about that soon. As for LEP Device, if you're okay with it, he recommended that we just go ahead and create it for now and hopefully we'll know more when the film comes out. We can just link on the tabbing from the LEP Helmet page, I think.
In order to keep consistency and to keep the tabs functionality from breaking, I just renamed the book version of Butler to "Domovoi Butler" as well. It's probably something that should have been done anyway.
Yeah, that is a good idea! As for the tabs, there should be a way that you can tweak it so that they work no matter what the names are, though I'm not really sure exactly how you do it. In any case, I agree that it makes sense, since Domovoi Butler is his full and proper name, even if it's not used much.
Agreed. In the meantime, I've gone ahead and added the alternate spelling to the page for the time being and also created "Aculus" as a redirect. If it turns out it's "Aculos" when the film releases, we can just get rid of them.
Hey there, I'm Marcus, aka TimeShade. I'm the Wiki Manager here to work with this community alongside ProfessorTofty.
As a Wiki Manager, I'm here to help the community and be a liaison to full-time Fandom staff. If you ever have a question or issue relating to the wiki, editing, etc., please don't hesitate to contact me on my message wall!
I'm sure you also heard by now that Artemis Fowl will be getting a Disney+ release instead of theatrical.
Hi! With the film coming out in about three months, I was wondering if I could make some updates to the main page to feature information about the film. Some details about the film itself, pictures of the characters as how they appear int the film, stuff like that. Thanks in advance!
BTW, do you know what font it was that was used to create the header images on the homepage that say stuff like "About," "Characters," etc.? Ideally it would be good to have a header like that for the film, but it should match the same look.
That would be good. And perhaps once we start getting more information about the film proper, we could update the character images to feature stuff from the film and maybe make some other updates. I'm hoping that Disney gets on with releasing more info soon - it's kinda annoying that this is coming out in May and the only official poster still lists the old August release date and there's still only the one trailer.
