Role in series

Artemis Fowl and the Opal Deception

In Artemis Fowl and the Opal Deception, Opal Koboi avoided prison by entering a self-induced coma; a technique taught to her by Gola Schweem. This allowed her to be held in the Institute in the padded-cell wing while she was in the coma.[1]

During Opal's stay, the hospital staff were submitted to background checks. Dr. Argon himself had to undergo random DNA testing to make sure he was not an impostor.[1]

Ever since Opal Koboi was admitted, it had apparently become fashionable to become a patient, or for someone in one's family to, and it was a profit to the clinic when those patients were rich.[1]

In Opal Koboi's case, there was a large plasma screen outside her room on the wall, where they display any kind of information from equipment to which the screens are connected. Opal was also suspended in a hammock-like device that would trap her in it if she tried to escape. Further, the heavy doors were reinforced and equipped with a keypad to type in a personal code to open the door.[1]

The room was spacious and has gently pulsing floor mood lights with walls made of soft plastic. There were recessed speakers that could transmit audio such as gentle sounds of nature.[1]

Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex

By the end of Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex, Artemis Fowl II was admitted to the Institute for treatment for his Atlantis Complex.[2]

Artemis Fowl and the Last Guardian

As it was in the seventh book, it has been speculated that Artemis Fowl II will still be in treatment for his Atlantis Complex in the eighth and final novel of the series.[2]
