FOALY: "No. I'm suggesting you do not own a copy of the rule book, and if you do, you have certainly never opened it."'

Artemis Fowl Sr. is the husband of Angeline and father of Artemis Fowl ll, a child prodigy and protagonist of the Artemis Fowl series. He disappeared two years before the events of Artemis Fowl, the Russian Mafia having bombed his ship, the Fowl Star, as it went around to Kola Peninsula, in Russia; they did not want competition in their market from a westerner.

Though legally dead, his son never gave up the hope that he was still alive, piling expeditions in the Arctic, which the resulting expenses partially led him to his life of crime, and was finally able to rescue him from the aforementioned mafia holding him to ransom with the help of Holly Short and Julius Root in The Arctic Incident. He remained unconscious for almost two full years before awakening. When he did, the magic Holly had used to heal his injuries partially affected him to turn over a new leaf, and he has since been trying to get the Fowl family back to being 'legit'. This plan has been succeeding.

Pre-series[]

Like many of the Fowl clan before him, Artemis I was influenced by the residual magic present on the land of Fowl Manor, and then became involved in fairy affairs, before he was mind-wiped. He only regained memory of this as of The Fowl Twins series, when Artemis II stimulated his hippocampus, before departing on his journey to Mars, to overcome the effects of the mind-wipe.

Dr. Argon states in The Last Guardian that he found records dating back thousands of years detailing the members of the Fowl family line trying to obtain the crock of gold, although Artemis II is the only so far to have achieved such. Artemis I specifically hog-tied a dwarf who was drawn to the estate because of the residual magic. This mirrors how Artemis II would later meet Mulch Diggums during the Siege on Fowl Manor and become allies with him. This also explains why Artemis I was fascinated with and frequently read The Crock of Gold to Artemis II as a child.

The Lost Colony[]

About a year after Artemis ll went to Limbo in his quest to save the demons, Artemis Senior became father to the twins Beckett and Myles.

His and his wife's profound suffering over the course of their eldest son's disappearance was later wiped from their minds by Artemis ll, using his stolen magic from Limbo, when he returned, three years into his own future. Butler had told Artemis I and Angeline everything about The People and of Artemis II's dealings with them, as he felt there was no other way to explain what had happened to Artemis, but by being mind wiped, they forgot both Artemis II's disappearance and about The People.

Deny All Charges[]

After the events of The Fowl Twins, Artemis I becomes distressed at the thought of Myles and Beckett discovering the existence of fairies, like many of the Fowl Family before them, especially given the dangerous escapes their adventures have already proven.

He states that part of his motivation for selling and moving out of the manor was to escape the influence of the residual magic present there (Deny all Charges, p. 57). He felt that too many members of the Fowl family have lost their lives or been otherwise harmed in order to protect and help The People. He says the hall of portraits at Fowl Manor were all of family members who died as a result of involvement with fairies.

He specifically lists one of his brothers (not Uncle Foxy as he is still alive), his grandmother, two uncles, his stepsister, and of course, Artemis II, although he was revived through cloning. Some family members were injured instead of killed; like how he lost his leg and his mother lost an eye. He is shown to still be highly affected by Artemis II's temporary death in The Last Guardian, fearing the same could happen to the twins.

Because of this, he implements strict rules and protocols around Beckett and Myles' activities, specifically forbidding any further interactions with fairies. He later recants this by the end of the book, but his actions prove that he has taken on a very different approach to parenting when compared to how Artemis II was raised. It is said that he treated Artemis II more like a business partner rather than a son, which contributed to his lack of social development and his disregard for the law.

His hands-off, emotionally detached approach negatively impacted Artemis II, and Artemis Senior goes very far in the opposite direction in this instance with the high level of control over the twins. He ends up accepting that the Fowl family and fairies are intrinsically linked no matter what he does, and accepts the compromise that Lazuli Heitz will continue to serve as a fairy liaison, given the title of Ambassador, Fowl Affairs, as she was designated in The Fowl Twins.

Personality[]

Artemis Fowl I was described as being a great criminal like the rest of the Fowls. He had a love for gold and held the family business and fortune in high priority. His son described him as being a gruff, no-nonsense man who taught him the workings of the stock market and the running of the family business. One of the strongest aspects he instilled in Artemis II was a love of gold, reading him the story, "The Crock of Gold", telling Artemis II that if the man had just planned a little more, he would have gotten the gold. He also promoted the family motto: Aurum Est Potestas, "Gold is power".

However, after his return from Russia, Artemis Senior changed. He decided to become an honest businessman, and joined Angeline in her environmentalist projects. His personality also changed drastically to a joking and loving husband and father. These characteristics, as his wife mentioned, were that of the man she had married before he took on the family business.

Physical Appearance[]

One of Artemis Senior's legs is a prosthetic. It was amputated from the combination of being damaged in the accident, and lack of proper treatment. In The Lost Colony, when Artemis Fowl II sees his hair covered with grey ash, he 'swears he could have been looking at his father', suggesting that Artemis Fowl Sr. resembles Artemis Fowl II.

Trivia[]

Eoin Colfer stated in an interview with The Guardian in 2006 that he originally planned on "killing off" Artemis I and Angeline. He said that his perspective changed when he became a father himself, and so he decided to retain them in the story, and redeemed Artemis I's character after his brush with death to establish him as more of a traditional family man. Eoin's experience with parenthood also inspired the creation of Myles and Beckett Fowl, who were both in part based on his two sons.
