Artemis Fowl is on a mission to rescue his father, who has been kidnapped. Artemis must get ahold of a fairy, steal its gold, and use the gold to pay his father's ransom. The problem? He has no idea where to find the magical creatures. With the help of his friends and a reluctant captured fairy, Artemis will discover these magical creatures aren't just real--they're really powerful! Will he be able to get out of this foul situation and save his father?
Artemis Fowl Jr. lives in Fowl Manor, and is no ordinary boy. He is a brilliant genius and enjoys studying the legends of fairies, spurred on by the postcards sent by his father, Artemis Fowl Sr. One day, Artemis Fowl Sr. disappears while aboard the Fowl Star. The young Artemis watches in disbelief as news reports start appearing on television designating his father a criminal and saying that he is wanted as a person of interest in a number of high-profile robberies. He becomes determined to find his father, but before he can act further, he receives a call from a mysterious stranger who tells him in a raspy voice: "I have your father. If you want to see him alive again, get me one ton of fairy gold."
Artemis wonders if the message means that fairies are actually real and discovers a secret message in the postcards sent by his father: "Time 2 believe in them." He puts in motion in a plan, traveling to Ho Chi Minh City with his protector Butler and tricking a fairy into showing him a copy of the fairy guidebook, The Booke of the People. Meanwhile, a fairy named Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police is busy working a tedious prison transport job when her superior Commander Root orders her to track down a troll that has escaped the surface. Although she succeeds in her mission, she uses up the last of her magic and has to recharge, and during the Ritual to do is captured and ransomed by Artemis.
Commander Root immediately launches a rescue operation to get her back. His first stage involves sending the dwarf Mulch Diggums into Fowl Manor. However, Mulch becomes distracted by a safe within the manor, which turns out to contain an extremely valuable fairy artifact known as the Aculos. Also within it is a piece of paper which reveals that Artemis's father and Holly's missing father, Birchwood Short, worked together as partners. This causes Holly to realize that they are allies. She heals Butler when he is attacked by a troll sent in by Commander Root and his team. She then gives the group the information they need to survive the next and final stage of the plan: a bio-bomb. Artemis is left with his prize of fairy gold, but when Commander Root goes into retrieve the Aculos, she discovers that Mulch Diggums has escaped with it. Artemis receives another call from the stranger and tells her that he has the gold. The caller asks how a regular boy like him managed to steal fairy gold and he replies "I'm Artemis Fowl. And I'm a criminal mastermind."
