The Aculos, was an extremely valuable treasure of the People. It was said to be a skeleton key for the universe which could open portals between worlds.

History

"You've seen the news. The Aculos is still missing."
―Commander Root to her forces[src]

The Aculos was held in a safe in Fowl Manor, protected by Artemis Fowl Sr., a long-time defender of fairy treasures and a secret operative for the people. However, one day, Artemis Fowl Sr. was kidnapped by Opal Koboi, who called his son, Artemis Fowl Jr. and demanded the Aculos in exchange for his father's safe return.

The disappearance of the Aculos was a crime of great concern to the fairy world and those within LEPRecon. Upon learning of it, Artemis Fowl hatched a plan to obtain it in order to get his father back. He read of the Aculos in his father's journals and a fairy named Beechwood Short who swore to protect it. He kidnapped Holly Short, a fairy and an elf, and an officer of LEPRecon, not realizing at the time that he had captured Beechwood's daughter. She revealed to him that her father had hidden the Aculos and for that, some people called him a criminal.

Artemis Fowl's plan proceed as expected, with the dwarf Mulch Diggums tunneling into Fowl Manor and cracking open the manor's safe, which contained the Aculos. Afterwards, the time freeze at Fowl Manor broke down, and Mulch swallowed the Aculos in order ot protect it. Holly Short later returned, telling Artemis that she was breaking every rule in the book. She activated the power of the Aculos, and, using a spell, summoned its power to transport Artemis Fowl Sr. back to Fowl Manor. Afterwards, Holly returned home a hero to her people and Artemis told Opal Koboi that he and his family were coming for her.

Description

The Aculos appeared like an upside-down, golden acorn with Gnommish symbols embellished on it. It was a weapon of great power, said to be so fearsome it could only be imagined. It was said to be the source of fairy magic and as important to them as the sun. The power of the Aculos was activated using the following incantation: "Carry me always. Carry me well. I am thy teacher of herb and spell. I am thy link to power arcane. Forget me, and thy magic shall wane."

Trivia

  • The Aculos was created for the Artemis Fowl film release and does not appear in the original Artemis Fowl novels.
  • IGN's review of the Artemis Fowl film describes the Aculos as being the film's "McGuffin" (an object or device within a story which serves as a trigger for the plot), but ultimately "an empty shiny object that adds very little substance to the story."[1]
